Guide 01 / Choosing a width

48 vs 60-inch desk: will two monitors fit?

A 48-inch desk can work for two monitors if their actual bodies and supports fit. Measure those first; choose 60 inches when you need more side space and the room can spare it.

The short answer

A 48-inch desk can accommodate some two-monitor layouts, but “two monitors” is not a size. Add the actual outer widths of your screens, then check bases, keyboard space and depth. In the straight, no-gap examples below, two Dell P2425H bodies span 42.42 inches; two P2725H bodies span 48.08 inches. A 60-inch top gives either pair another foot of side-to-side room.

Will two monitors fit on 48 inches?

Screen size is measured diagonally. It does not tell you the horizontal space taken by the monitor housing. Start with the manufacturer's overall width, including the bezel. These two real models illustrate why “24-inch” and “27-inch” screens should not be added as though those labels were widths.

Straight side-by-side bodies with no gap; the table shows whether they stay within the nominal top width. These are calculations from rounded published measurements, not a tested setup. The remaining width is not a measurement of free workspace: bases, speakers, a laptop, edge margins and your layout still matter.

Two Dell P2425H bodies span 42.42 inches across either a 48 or 60 inch desk. Two P2725H bodies span 48.08 inches, slightly more than a nominal 48 inch width.

Three layout checks before choosing a width

  1. Keep both screen bodies within the top? For two straight P2725H screens with no overhang, nominal 48 inches is already insufficient in this example. Angling changes both width and depth; measure the new arrangement rather than assuming it solves fit.
  2. Keep a laptop or speakers beside the monitors? Make paper outlines of the actual items. Put them in their intended positions instead of treating the remaining width as an empty rectangle. A vertical laptop stand, open laptop and notebook use very different space.
  3. Use stands or an arm? Stands need stable support within the desktop. An arm may free base space, but does not make the screen bodies narrower. Verify its load, mounting, clamp and rear-clearance requirements separately.

Once the side-to-side layout works, check the screen position and front-to-back room. A 60 × 24 top has the same depth as 48 × 24. Neither width guarantees viewing comfort, mounting compatibility or a suitable keyboard position.

What changes in a matching 48 × 24 / 60 × 24 purchase?

Our desk example holds the visible UPLIFT V3 options constant: standard white laminate, one-inch top, no grommet holes, black C-frame with nominal 24-inch feet, and Basic Display Angled keypad. No paid accessories or assembly service were selected.

The extra area is a 12 × 24-inch strip: 288 square inches, or two square feet, 25% above the smaller top. It buys side space, not extra monitor setback. If your measured layout already fits on 48 inches, a smaller desk can preserve the route to a door or storage unit without giving up equipment space you need.

Does the wider desk fit the room?

Mark both desktop footprints with tape. Open nearby doors and drawers, pull your chair out, and check the narrow route between desk and furniture. Measure obstructions behind and below the top too. Nominal desktop area is not the desk's complete operating clearance.

Check the full intended height travel around windowsills and shelving, with cables routed so they cannot be pulled taut or trapped. If the added foot blocks access, the 60-inch top may solve screen spacing while creating a room problem. There is no universal clearance figure here; test the actual room and equipment.

Choose after the layout, not before it

48 inches is worth considering when…

Your actual screens, supports and daily equipment fit, depth is sufficient, and the narrower footprint preserves useful room space.

60 inches is worth considering when…

The room can spare a foot and a measured layout needs more side space. Do not pay for width to solve a depth problem.
